RAMSEY WIN THE BATTLE OF THE SHIRE

24/4/2014

Ramsey embarked on a new venture as they played their first ever match in the Fenland trophy vs March Cricket club.

Ramsey won the toss and decided to bowl giving new signing Tom Thackray a chance to open the bowling with one of last years under 15's PJ Malem. Both bowled very well and won the battle against some early big hitting from the hosts. PJ Malem took the first wicket caught by Matthew Slack at cover.

Tim Willis and Jace Anderson came on first change and both left armers bowled well in partnership , Jace Anderson bowling 6 overs for 12 runs.

Tom Thackray came back for his 2nd spell and took 2 wickets in 2 overs to give him his first Ramsey wickets. TJ Harding also bowled well taking 1-16 off 4 overs.

March batted well setting the young Rams 165 to win ....

Ed Machett and TJ Harding took the crease knowing just over 4 an over would give the team their first win.

A good start by both saw the Rams make a steady start with both openers making 12 and 14.

Ollie Stevens came to the crease as number 3 and showed some powerful hitting before being caught in the deep on 30.

Mark Saunders the youngest player on show batted steadily rotating the strike before being bowled by a very good yorker from the March bowler.

James Woodward back playing for the Rams this year helped the youngsters at the crease and made a swift 32 before being given LBW.

Ramsey lost a quick 3 wickets loosing Anderson, Thackray and Charlie Saunders.

Ramsey needing 60 off the last 12 overs saw Matthew Slack and Tim Willis left at the crease to win the match , the Rams passed their target with 4 overs to go and a win in their first ever Fenland Trophy match.

An excellent win by the team and all wickets were taken by the juniors on show plus some confident batting by Ollie Stevens made the result even more pleasing.

Next Match Doddington at home 4th May .... 1.30 at Cricketfield Lane.

The Ginger Willows Star in Rare Loss for Ramsey 3's

16/7/2013

Ramsey 3's travelled to Sawtry with a proper 3rd XI side. With the toss won Buddle Jnr elected to bowl on a track with pyramid shaped stumps behind the lines on a misbehaving wicket. Although there were moans of going out in the heat the decision looked a good one with Tim ‘The Ringer’ Willis striking almost immediately with the new ball to take his first wicket of the day. 4 balls in and 1 down without scoring Sawtry were looking shaky. With this on came the captain himself opening with his (3 overs maximum) seam up a few interesting short balls obviously shook the batsmen up and unofficial willow was able to grab a second wicket.

6 Overs in and about 45-2 Sawtry were looking to build a base and Buddle Jnr was looking for the oxygen. Here came the introduction of ‘The better Hutchcraft’ Marcus with the ball starting to hoop and although some broughton-esc beamers were bowled and a clean bowled not achieved because of a front foot no-ball he finally got settled and found a wicket. Sawtry were however looking to gain a foothold by this stage and the decision to take pace off the ball with new signing A Hayden and Sam ‘The Official Willow’ Wilson was taken. It worked wonders as the scoring rate slowed and 3 more wickets were gained.
Well in to the tail and with some genuine walking wickets in bat some simple on the stumps bowling was needed and Chris ‘The Slayer’ Parkins did just this with 2 wickets in his 4 overs for the cost of only 6 runs. The final death bowler was young TJ Harding who got some serious turn and bounce in his 2.2 overs and took the final wicket to leave Sawtry 155 all out.
After a great showing in the field the simple instruction of ‘everyone get 15 and we’ll get this’ was clearly ignored by almost all the top order as Ramsey collapsed to 11-3 after a duck by Hayden, 4 from Gogsy, and 7 from Martin. A brief partnership started to develop nicely between the other Parkins and Ollie ‘Slick Rick’ Wilson. However after that ended the Rams looked to be on for a quick return home. In step the skipper who played a strong captains innings for a solid…4 balls before top edging high up to cover. Ramsey now 50 odd for 6 and seemingly out of batsmen needed a miracle to get anywhere near the 155 set by Sawtry. In step the factor 50 sun cream needing duo of Tim ‘Chanderpaul stance’ Willis and Sam ‘I have two shots’ Wilson. The fallen batsmen sat in awe as the ginger pair pumped the Sawtry bowlers all over the ground and both achieved personal best scores of 36 and 33 respectively. However this wasn’t quite enough and the final drinks break brought the last wicket of Sam Wilson to leave 133 all out, 23 runs short of what they needed.

It was still a good showing for a side without any supposed ringers (although Tim would now like to be considered one) and with some batting practise the team definitely has the potential to grind out victories without the previously much needed help from above. Man of the match winner Tim Willis has specially requested that everyone (especially Vinny) is made well aware that he got 2 wickets and took a catch in the deep and hit 36 runs including one ‘HUGE’ six. Runner up to the award Sam Wilson also got two wickets, 33 runs but dropped a DOLLY after his brother Ollie Wilson had miraculously caught two from behind the stumps.
Viva La Ram!!

2nd XI 'Nick' a Third Successive Win

16/7/2013

Picture
A glorious day at Cricketfield Lane saw the visit of Barnack CC. Having won the toss Rams elected to bat on a hard wicket, quick outfield and a 10 man strong fielding side! An early dismissal of Elliot Smith (0) saw Matt Slack (31) hit the middle early! Such was the case with Damien Clarke's batting, hitting a quickfire 52 before being bowled. Jordan Cafferkey also made light work of the spin and seam attacks hitting a creative 66 before being bowled by the spinner. Quick wickets of Manchett (3) and Burns (0) saw Australian Mark Nicholls hit the English wicket. A quality display of batting saw him romp up a rapid 54, hitting fences and trees beyond the confines of the boundary before Shahid the spinner hitting the poles once more! More was to come from the spinner as he mopped up the end of the innings with 3 more wickets. Rams finishing on a respectable 251 all out.
The sun still honing down on the field, the Rams opening bowlers Nick Page (1 wicket) and Mark Nicholls started to chip away at Barnack's attacking batting style, seeing away the top three batsmen for no more than 25 runs, including a catch from Tom Burns. Was the time when Mark started to crank up his Aussie fast bowling and saw Rams' slip cordon hoping not for a late cut and fizzing head height rocket from "the quickest bouncer the Ramsey wicket has ever seen"! Softening up the attack gave Mark 3 wickets for the match and a quality bowling spell of 12-1-65-3. With P.Best(45) going well, the skipper turned to himself and the spinners to do the deeds. With D.Ashraf producing a baseball style 45, Woodward was glad to strike the pads of the batsmen and twas the end of the biffing saga which was starting to get close to the required run rate. Woodward gained the crucial wicket of P.Best, with a catch off his own bowling. S.Best then came to the crease and played well for a decent half century which brought Barnack closer to the target. With J.Cafferkey racking up a cheeky 1 wicket haul Rams were struggling to find the last two wickets and a timely change of bowling attack from the skipper saw the introduction of Ash 'Big Bird' Wells who racked up the pace once more and took little time in completing the Ramsey win with 2 wickets in 2 balls!  Overall a quality display of cricket from the Rams and a fine individual display from Mark Nicholls with 54 runs and 3 wickets
A good 20pt win for the Rams 2nd XI which sees them leapfrog Barnack in the table and nestle 5th in Hunts 1. On the back of three successive wins and a run of form the Rams now play second placed Huntingdon (A) and top of the table Blunham (H) in consecutive weeks to try to close the gap on the title.

Manchett Shines in vain for Ramsey 2nds

13/5/2013

Ramsey 2nds started this season with hopes of title chasing glory but quickly their targets seem to be falling more in line with relegation avoidance after posting 3 defeats in 3 matches....

Rodrigo Heaps on the runs, as 2nds are battered at Blunham

29/4/2013

The 2nd XI had a day to forget on Saturday, and it will be a case of the season starting again next weekend for them.

Travelling away against title favorites Blunham was always going to be a tough start to the season, and so it proved as Blunham took full advantage of some poor bowling and a tiny ground. Kanchana Rodrigo and captain Connor Heaps both scored quick fire centuries, Rodrgo scoring 166 in just 134 balls and Heaps scoring 113 in 99 balls. Poor Michael Pickard must of been cursing, being the only man out when he was bowled by Adrian Cade.

Cade could only bowl 1.2 overs, before injury saw his day brought to an end. He may of been the difference if he had stayed fit, as only Steve Brown and himself were able to bowl at under 5 runs per over.

Blunham final total of 310 was always going to be a tall order to chase down. And so it proved with only 3 batsmen getting into double figures. Ash Wells batted well for 70, getting to his half century with a brutal heave over mid-wicket and Matthew Slack looked good before being caught for 32.

In the end the 2nds were bowled out for 172, losing by 138 runs.

Despite this, it didn't stop John Wells celebrating his sons half century in style!

Ram's held by stubborn Sawston batting

29/4/2013

Saturday afternoon in freezing cold conditions at Cricketfield Lane saw Ramsey amass a total of 213/3 declared in 43 overs.

Aussie import Luke Stewart scored his first century for the club, getting there at speed off of just 75 balls. It included 3 sixes in a row of Sawston's Kiwi spinner Vaughan Blanchard, this was particulary pleasing for the Aussie! Luke was ably supported by the top order by the Cafferkey brothers Michael 28 and Simon 36 with Jimmy Markland contributing a solid 42. All 3 wickets were picked up by Vaughan Blanchard.

In reply Sawston were never really in the hunt and from around the 20th over it was really a question of whether they could hold on for a draw. Once again Sam Rippington the 5 wicket man from last week against Castor & Ailsworth was at it again. Having lost the early wicket of Luke Spears to skipper Taylor West, Sam proceeded to 'rip' out the heart of the Sawston batting with a spell of 7 overs 4 for 17. the two Michael's Kay and Cafferkey also chipped in with a wicket and despite Sam picking up his second five for in a row Sawston managed to hang for a draw, much of the credit for which must go to Mathew Ellis who batted for 17 overs for 24 not out.

Washed out at Wisbech

15/4/2013

The 1st XI friendly at Wisbech ended up being abandoned, but there were promising signs for the season ahead.

James Markland stole the show with an unbeaten 97, just falling short of a well deserved century. Skipper Taylor West was also among the runs with a swift 61, whilst new overseas player Luke Stewart was looking comfortable before he edged behind for 30.

In reply Wisbech were 76-3 off of 14 overs, Ash Wells claiming 2 wickets and Michael Cafferky 1, before the match was abandoned by the rain.
